Impact Storytelling Practices

Practitioner Survey

It’s up to us.

Communicators still do not have clear industry standards and best practices for ethical impact storytelling — despite 20 years of the storytelling boom. What has been helpful is sharing our policies with one another — many of us use these as starting-points — or aspirational goals — for our own organizations. But the practical questions of an ethical process aren’t always included — and processes can vary greatly as the impact sector ranges from large multinational NGOS to small community organizations.

We need guidance that we know how to execute, that fits our organization’s work and that we can present to our employers and funders — who don’t always understand the reality of collecting and producing impact stories.

The survey has three objectives:

  1. ‍To give organizations insight into how their practices measure against similar organizations.

  2. To answer practical questions that practitioners have about ethical storytelling, by connecting with existing research or guiding future research.

  3. To reveal the practical challenges that practitioners face, so that solutions can be found and shared at scale.
